Füssen Tourist Information

Füssen is a town in the Ostallgäu district, sitting about five kilometers away from the Austrian borders of Bavaria in Germany. It is located along the banks of the River Lech flowing into Forggensee, a man-made lake built for flood prevention by catching all of the melting snow during spring time and then drained in October in time for the next spring. The town features a coat of arms showing a triskelion, or three legs.

At 808 meters above sea level, Füssen is in the highest location of the towns in Bavaria. Apart from the height though, the town has a notable location because of its proximity to a number of top destinations in the area. For starters, the Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, both famous castles, are located close to Füssen, with travelers coming by train just hopping on a bus when they arrive at the town train station. The famous German composer, Richard Wagner, also passes by Füssen in the past a lot whenever he came to visit King Ludwig II. For those headed for the Romantic road, the town is also the terminus you should go to.

Füssen - Nature and Culture

Part of the attraction in Füssen is the oldest fresco in the country of Germany located in the St. Mangs Basilicas crypt dating back to the year 980. Saint Mang is the patron saint of the town, with his original burial place found in the small chapel he himself built. Called Magnus of Füssen, Saint Mangs bones were moved to the church crypt when it was being built in 850. However, his bones disappeared in 1100. Today, the crypt is available for public viewing but the only bone remaining of the saint is a relic housed in a glass cross on top of the main altar. The glass cross also contains Saint Mangs chalice, breast cross, and staff.

In celebration of Saint Mangs feast day which falls on September 6, a Holy Mass is held, after which the participants head for the old part of town by torchlight. The festivities last for a week wherein a special kind of wine, the Magnus Wine, is sold. Only 500 bottles of the special wine are produced though for the celebration. If youre headed to Bavaria in September and can squeeze in time to drop by on the sixth in Füssen, then you should. It may be a small town but it is a special celebration worth taking part in.
